January

I can’t believe that we are fast approaching the end of January already.  My year resolution to write more posts hasn’t gone too well so far…..  I think i’m going to try to post a blog every three to four weeks as I think is a much more realistic target.

The weather here is absolutely terrible again today.  Rain, wind, rain and more rain.  I think we have only had about three good dog walking days so far this year.  What a great investment I made in my new waterproof leggings.

Here’s a pic taken from my kitchen window which I like – well from this side of the glass anyway.  The tulips definitely brighten it up!

I have been keeping myself very busy and have started working on some new textile designs.

My sketch book shows some preliminary sketches and experimentation with colour with using my new lovely Golden Fluids and Acrylics.

I then transferred my sketch book images on to a large piece of cartridge paper again using my new paints thinking that it might make a nice textile design.  These images have been inspired by photographs taken by me over the summer and also work by Josef Frank.

I was very pleased with the above design but unfortunately my Agent was not referring to the work as a  ‘felt pen technique’.  I did use both a paint brush and a refillable pen (which at the time I thought was a great idea)  when colouring my drawings.  I guess this pen must have given this felt pen look.  Oh well i’m sure it will come in handy for other work in the future.  I have just started to plan another design with the same drawings but transferring them into linos.  Here is a sneak preview of the planning stage:

As I have to be working on more than one thing at a time I am also cutting a nautical design into another lino.

This is the outline of the work after it has been traced onto the lino.  The next step will be to get carving.

I’ve also been making Fine Art Magnets and mounting them on card for my Etsy Shop.  I have made a few extra Love Birds, Nights Birds and Together ones thinking of Valentines Day which is only a couple of weeks away.  My shop is going to be closed from this Saturday the 30th January until Monday the 8th February.  This is because i’m going on a skiing holiday to La Tania in the French Alps.  I have mixed feelings about this holiday as on one hand i’m really looking forward to it and then on the other I haven’t been for a few years and am therefore quite nervous.

On Monday I drove over to Hang Ups in Tunbridge Wells to collect my artwork. Unfortunately, after 30 years of trading Mike and Lori have decided to close their doors. I wish them both lots of happiness as they are both lovely people.

Another New Year Resolution was to tidy my work space.   This is a real challenge for me. Actually, to be fair tidying anything is a real challenge for me.

I have also had a meeting with Sarah from Made and Making in Ditchling this year about running some linoprinting workshops at the new South Downs Heritage Centre.  We hope to start these in April and so I am very excited about this.  I have also decided to put more time into my textile designs.  I know I still have a lot to learn in this respect, as I only started last year but am also really looking forward to this.  I have a meeting with my Agent when I get back from France to discuss some ideas.  I have also booked myself into a collagraph workshop in March which should be fun.

I am going to a talk by Mark Hearld at Ditchling Museum tomorrow evening.  I love Mark’s work and am hoping to get some inspiration from him.  No pressure Mark!

I still have a couple of spaces left on my Beginners Workshop due to take place on Saturday 13th February if anyone out there is interested?
